It is Sunday afternoon, October 31, 1954. I am in the girl's dorm (converted BOQ) of the University of Maryland, McGraw Kaserne, Munich. Down the hall comes Peggy Shepherd, her eyes sparkling and her pony tail bouncing. "Who would like to meet some guys this everning? We can go down to the Eagle Club and attend the Servicemen's Gospel Hour." (Would you believe such an invitation from a chaplain's daughter?) Several of us accepted the invitation - Mimi, Janet, Lani, Diane Fairchild and Diane Doubleday and maybe some others. We boarded the big army bus and headed for Hitler's old hideout. We soon discovered that Peggy already had her eye on one special soldier named Charlie. After the singing and preaching someone suggested we all go downstairs to the snack bar. A cute airman sat across from me. His name was Dave and he winked at me! (We all called him Dave in those days but later when I met his mother she informed me that his name was David and he should be called David.)
