Charlie, one small but valuable and for some reason memorable piece of advice I received from you was in 1987, as I was heading to Cairo for three months of work in the Coptic Museum. To one not yet acquainted with all the players there, nor initiated in all the mysteries of how to grease the bureaucracy for more consistent, day-to-day help with access to the manuscripts, you counseled a gift of a bottle of Johnny Walker Black Label to a certain curator. A small tip about private tastes, which is, I hope, not the only reason I can refer to Madam Samiha today as our good friend. But it insured a good start!
